An Apple a Day? Reconsidering When (and why) to Drink “Hard” Cider
For many years “hard” apple cider was part of the trinity of the most popular alcoholic beverages in North America. Cider was enjoyed in England, brought over on the Mayflower, and the primary reason why the famous “Johnny Appleseed” made his mythical journey throughout the United States and Ontario. Unfortunately, the disastrous prohibition period in the United States all but made this delicious beverage extinct in the “New World.” Luckily, the recent craft beer movement in the United States and Canada has brought cider back as well. Numerous brands from the Europe as well as North America (including Ontario’s own Ironwood ) can be found in the LCBO, bars, and even your local breweries.
However, despite its popularity, cider still gets a bad rap as only being a seasonal drink and not paring well with food. This, according to Candice Dixon of The Daily Meal and Ethan Fixell of Thrillist is simply not the case In both of their articles they describe numerous reasons why cider can and should be enjoyed both year-round and what foods pair well with this unique beverage. Some of these reasons include cider is (usually) gluten-free, sessionable (low alcohol content), has more vitamin C than green tea and tomatoes, and just like a nice Reselling, can vary in sweetness. Food parings include asparagus, Thai, pork, and even a creamy casserole. For more about “whens and whys” of cider please find Dixon’s article here and Fixell’s here.
Speaking of cider, we are proud to represent Ironwood Cider House. There original cider is considered an “English Pub Style” which it is much more dry and less sweet than many ciders on the market. Their cider is certified vegan and pairs well with many meals or if you just want a break from the “usual.” With a number of seasonal releases you can drink Ironwood year-round.
